HABEMUS PAPAM
"WE HAVE A POPE!"
Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of Germany has been elected as our new Pope. He has chosen the name Pope Benedict XVI. White smoke poured from the Sistine Chapel and bells tolled to announce the conclave had produced a pope.
As he emerged from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, crowds cheered. Pope Benedict is the Church's 265th pontiff. He is the first German pope in centuries. He served John Paul as head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. He is 78 years old.
The 265th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church succeeds John Paul II, who gained extraordinary popularity over a 26-year pontificate, history's third-longest papacy. Millions mourned him all around the world, demonstrating his profound charisma.
Pope Benedict XVI has many challenges facing him, but with God's help and our prayers, may he be given the strength and wisdom to carry out His plan and bring forward the destiny of the Church.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
At the Last Supper Jesus talked about having faith in God and faith in Him. Jesus was talking about our faith and his own faith. We read this Gospel a month after Easter to help us focus on our relationship with the Risen Lord. The Resurrection was an incredible event and the foundation or rather the cornerstone of our faith. The second reading, (1 Peter 2:6), tells us about the "cornerstone, chosen and precious, and whoever believes in it shall not be put to shame". Our faith deals with our relationship with the Risen Jesus.
Jesus says that He is the Way and the Truth and the Light. He shows us the Way of faith. He is the Son of God, the bringer of Truth. He is the Light of love and peace for us, no matter how dark and frightening our lives may become.

Wonderful God, your Son, Jesus Christ, is our Best Friend. He taught us about faith and he showed us how to be loving people. May our love for our Best Friend bring joy to others. Amen.
