THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
The Gospel story today is about love. Jesus preached about love in everything he said or did. Jesus said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” If Jesus’ commandments were listed they would all contain the same word “love”. “Love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, soul, and mind” (Matthew 22:37). “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:31). “Love your enemies” (Luke 6:27). “There is no greater love than to lay down your life for another” (John 15:13).
We understand love because we are familiar with the emotion. We love our families and our friends. You hear people say they love their pet or their country. This is the kind of love that moves us and makes feel joy. Jesus wants us to know this kind of happiness.
Harder to understand is the kind of love Jesus is asking us to have for strangers, for someone who was rude to us or a convicted criminal. We need to love them even while we disapprove of what they have done or in spite of the fact that we don’t know anything about them. One of the wonderful aspects about being a follower of Jesus is that He helps us to do what He commands us to do. He knows there will be times when it is difficult for us to love another, so He asks the Father to give us help. “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you always.” Even when we don’t feel the love, we can love – because we have the Spirit of Love with us always.

Dear God, we want to love and we try to love and most of the time we do love. When we find it hard to love, we ask for the Spirit of Love, through Your Son, Jesus, to be with us. Amen.
