DATES TO REMEMBER
Aug 6, 7, 12, 13 & 14 SGM Players Summer Show "Story Time"

MISSION APPEAL
Fr. Sammy Alvero will be celebrating Mass at St. Gerard during the weekend of Aug. 13th and 14th.
The beneficiary of this year's Mission Appeal is the Archdiocese of Palo in the Philippines. The Archdiocese of Palo is located in Leyte, Philippines. It has a population of 1,572,472 of which 1,257,977 are Catholic. A total of 133 priests serve the needs of thes Catholics at 50 parishes and 1,270 Chapels.
The region where Palo is located is situated in one of the most depressed areas of the Philippines. It is also situated along the typhoon belt, where an average of 10 typhoons pass through each year. A recent survey indicated that 48.3% of the population live below the poverty line. A very clear gauge of this is finding that 71 % of the children are in varying degrees of malnutrition, with 3.8 % severely malnourished. Disease of the respiratory system posted the highest mortality rate with 21,701.16 cases per 100,000 population. Pneumonia is one of the highest causes of death. Tuberculosis, vascular diseases and hypertension follow this.
The help we get from the mission preaching goes a long way in promoting the various apostolates of the diocese, especially in the maintenance and support of the seminary and seminarians, most of whom come from poor families.
In behalf of thier Archbishop Pedro Dean, they wish to thank us for sharing the work of the Church in that part of the world. They also send us their blessings.

CATHOLIC SCHOOL FUND
Did you go to a Catholic School? Then don't forget the Cardinal's School Fund, established to help archdiocesan schools face financial challenges.
The tax-deductible fund is seeking critical donations because increasing costs jeopardize the future of many Catholic schools.
For more information, call (312) 751-05250 or visit www.archchicago.org.

THE WOMEN'S GUILD
The Women's Guild would like to remind everyone that they are still saving pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. This charity helps the families of children who have cancer by providing a place for the families to stay while the children are receiving treatment.
Sr. Catherine would also like to thank everyone for their ongoing support of the women's shelter she is associated with. The shelter is in continual need of toiletry supplies such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste, etc. There seems to be an ever increasing need to help families with young children. The small dent that we make with our donations combined with the generosity of others helps these families during the time of their greatest need.

ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
The Feast of the Assumption (Aug. 15th) falls on a Monday this year, therefore it is not a Holy Day of Obligation in 2005. St. Gerard Majella will only celebrate the 8:00 AM Mass on this date. Mass will be held in the Chapel located in the school.

CHRISTIAN VALUES
Christians today need to have greater conviction about the power of prayer than other people have about the power of money.

SIGNS OF HEAT STROKE
Heat stroke is caused by extended exposure to high temperatures, and can be life-threatening. The Illinois Department of Public Health advises that individuals watch for the following signs if hey are going to be outside for any lengthy amount of time on hot humid days:
-headache
-red, dry face
-skin that is hot to the touch
-a body temperature of 105 degrees or higher
-a rapid pulse
-loss of consciousness or
-seizures or an irregular heartbeat.
If you think someone is having a heat stroke, immediately get that person into a cool, shaded area and offer them water. Run a cool bath or put ice packs on the head, neck, and armpits. If the person is delirious or losing consciousness, take him or her to the hospital.

SGM PLAYERS
Tickets for the summer production, "Story Theatre" are now on sale. They may be purchased after each Mass or by calling the parish office, (708) 331-8400.
The production will include a "Spaghetti Dinner" featuring the food from the Country House restaurant on Aug. 7th and a "Lasagna Dinner" featuring the food from Rubinos on Aug. 13th. These meals are always delicious and you don't want to miss them.
The SGM Players would also like to thank the members of the Women's Guild and the Holy Name Society for making this show our churches first joint production with the three clubs. It is always wonderful when different organizations join together to achieve a common goal.

BLACK CATHOLIC MEN'S CONFERENCE

THE THREE R'S
Everyone should practice these three R's. The world would be a better place:
1. Respect for self; 2. respect for others; and 3. responsibility for all your actions.

WHAT'S YOUR CATHOLIC IQ?
The answers to last week's questions were: 1. (a); 2. (a); 3. (b); 4. (c); 5. (b)

1. In 1979 Pope John Paul II created a patron saint of those who promote ecology. Who is this heavenly Patron? (a) Saint Cuthbert; (b) Saint Francis of Assisi; (c) Saint Kevin; (d) Saint Cosmas; (e) none of the above.
2. In his message of 1990 Pope John Paul II referred to the ecological crisis in the world as a "moral problem". True or false?
3. Pope John Paul II says that God saw all His creation as "very good". Where dose this concept originate from? (a) Abraham; (b) the teaching of Jesus Christ; (c) the Biblical Book of Genesis; (d) Noah; (e) none of the above.
4. Is it true to say that according to Pope John Paul II the Bible teaches that God entrusted the whole of creation to mankind? Yes or No?

(a) from the Greek word "oikos' meaning "house"; (b) from the Latin word "oikus" meaning "to be unselfish"; (c) from the Greek word "oikos" meaning "to stop exploitation"; (d) from the Latin word "oikus" meaning "caretaker"; (e) the cry room.

CATHOLIC TRIVIA
Did you know?
St. Jerome translated the whole Bible from the original languages to Latin
from about the year 383 A.D. to 404 A.D. This version is known as the Vulgate.

The Canon of Sacred Scripture, the official list of the inspired books of the Bible, as contained in the Decree of Pope St. Damasus and published by a regional council of Carthage in 397 A.D., was formally defined by the Council of Trent in the 16th century.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
We go to church as hungry and thirsty pilgrims, searching for nourishment and God's gentle love. Just as the crowds who gathered around Jesus were miraculously fed with five loafs and two fishes, so, too, are we satisfied by the great love and generosity of our God.
The prophet Isaiah reminds us of these words of the Lord: "Come to me heedfully, listen, that you may have life". We come to church and before the Lord so that His words will nurture and sustain us on our earthly pilgrimage.
Today, take especially to heart the words of Saint Paul to the Romans: "We all often struggle on our journeys of faith". He reminds us that there is nothing that can separate us from God's love that comes to us in Christ Jesus. Do not be afraid to ask God to nourish and sustain us on the roads we travel.
