A LETTER FROM FRANCIS CARDINAL GEORGE

Dear Friends in Christ,

World Mission Sunday is an opportune occasion to increase our awareness of the urgent necessity to participate in the mission of Christ. Mission is a way of being church. Our discipleship is rooted in a personal conversion to Jesus Christ. Christ in the Eucharist continually transforms us into witnesses of his own love and mercy.

Mission calls us not only to live our faith fully but also to share it freely by reaching out and proclaiming the good news to those who are without a church family, unbelievers, inactive Catholics and any who seek full membership with us from other religions and other Christian traditions. These outreach activities are part of the essential missionary character of being Catholic.

We are called to transform the world in Christ by living out our faith in family, neighborhood, workplace and society. We demonstrate our faith in the priorities we work for and in the way we relate to others. Our goal is not simply to change individuals; we want to change the world.

Mission requires the support not only of prayer and sacrifice, but also of concrete material offerings. I take this opportunity to recall once again the valuable service rendered by the Pontifical Mission Societies (Propagation of the Faith) who assist the 1150 dioceses around the world that bring good news to people who do not yet know Christ. You have been generous in the past. This year with the tsunami in Asia and the hurricane disaster in the USA, thousands of churches, clinics, schools and religious houses need help to rebuild. I ask you to join the mission effort by supporting the Pontifical Mission Societies with spiritual and material cooperation.

Sincerely yours in Christ,
Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I.
Archbishop of Chicago

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
The Gospel message for today is clear: We should love the Lord with all our being, and our neighbor as ourselves. We want to follow Jesus' teaching about loving God with our whole heart and soul and mind. This is the greatest of all the commandments. Learning to love God is a life-long commitment. We have to get out among the people and into the world to learn to love God. Faced with delights and disappointments and frustrations and satisfactions of our relationships with others, we learn to love God. We cannot love God and hate the people who live next door to us or in a country far away. We can not love God and be more concerned about ourselves than others.
We will never learn everything there is to know about God. But we can learn to love God with our whole heart and soul and mind if we love others as ourselves.
