THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
As the weeks in Ordinary Time begin to wind down, the Gospel passages focus our attention on the end times. It is fitting that we renew this focus during the early part of November, as the days grow shorter and the darkness of night begins to lengthen. Even in the darkness, holy Wisdom is there to be our guide.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus says that the Kingdom of Heaven will be like ten women awaiting the arrival of the bridegroom. All ten know what a wonderful celebration is about to take place. Yet, when the bridegroom arrives, only five of the women are prepared to welcome him and to enter the wedding feast. Don’t the five unprepared women look foolish! They know a wonderful event is about to take place and yet they do not prepare themselves. Jesus wants us to see this foolishness and to choose to be prepared instead.

Almighty God, teach us to prepare our hearts, today and every day, to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven when your Son, Jesus Christ, comes in glory. Amen.
